The first thing I made during the pottery unit was the rose colored bowl. We were each given a slab of clay and I rolled it out to make in thinner. Then, after adding water to change the elasticity of the clay, I was able to mold it into the shape of a bowl. I actually put the clay into a plastic bowl to make the shape perfect. Instead of adding an actual texture to the clay, I wanted to added a detail to the rim. So, I braided two strands of clay and scored and slipped it to add it to the top. We let the clay bowls sit for one day and then they became leather hard. The clay was still moist enough to carve off any imperfections. After this stage, the clay became bone dry and then eventually greenware, meaning that it was ready to be fired in the kiln. After the bowl came out of the kiln, it was now in the bisque state and ready to be glazed. I chose the rose glaze and am very happy with the color. Since, there was extra time to do more pottery, I also made a ski bar mug and a tiny bear figurine, |
